• Commutative rule: 7 × 6 is the same as 6 × 7 — learn half the table.
• Break big numbers apart: 12 × 8 = (10 × 8) + (2 × 8) = 80 + 16 = 96.

• Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Bring down — repeat until nothing is left.
• The leftover at the end is the remainder: 47 ÷ 5 = 9 remainder 2.
• Check your work by multiplying back: 9 × 5 + 2 = 47.

• Parentheses, Exponents, Multiply/Divide, Add/Subtract — left to right.
• 2 + 3 × 4 = 14, not 20.
• Fractions: multiply straight across, divide by flipping the second fraction.

Split a 144-coin treasure between crew members without a calculator.

1. 144 ÷ 12 crew members — estimate first: 12 × 10 = 120, so it's above 10.
2. 12 × 12 = 144, so each crew member gets exactly 12 coins.
3. Now split the same 144 between 9 crew: 16 each. Prove it: 16 × 9 = 144.
